When choosing the right skin care, it is important that the ingredients and effect of the products match your skin type. Because our skin is just as individual as our appearance – and therefore has very different requirements.
In cosmetics, five different skin types are distinguished. The classification depends on how much sebum your skin produces, how high its moisture content is and how sensitive it is to external stimuli. Each skin type needs a skin care regimen that is tailored to it, so that the skin is optimally nourished and protected without aggravating undesirable skin conditions such as dryness or irritation.
We show you how you can easily determine your skin type yourself and which of our products are the right companions for your daily care!
The difference between skin type & condition
Before we get started with the individual skin types, it is important to understand that the current appearance of your skin is not necessarily the same as your type. Your skin type is genetically predetermined and will be with you your whole life. It determines how much sebum your skin produces and whether it is good or bad at retaining moisture. Your skin type can change slightly over the years, e.g. due to hormonal changes or ageing - but in essence it remains the same.
The skin condition, on the other hand, can adapt to changing internal and external influences - and thus cause a change in the skin's appearance. External influences include, for example, UV rays, air pollution, changes in climate (heat in summer / cold in winter) and the influence of skin care products.
Internal factors can also contribute to changes in the appearance of your skin - e.g. through the use of medication, prolonged stress, food intolerances, hormonal changes (pregnancy) or hereditary factors.
How to determine your skin type
To determine your skin type, all you need is some time, a mirror and water. First, gently cleanse your face without rubbing. Then dry it carefully and leave your skin alone for about 30 minutes – it is especially important not to apply any skin care products.
After this time, look at your face in the mirror:
- Is your whole face shiny? Then you probably have very oily skin.
- Is only the T-zone on your forehead, nose and chin shimmering? Then you have what is known as combination skin.
- If your skin is flaky or taut, this is a sign of dry skin.
- Spots and redness indicate sensitive skin.
- If none of the observations apply, you have normal skin.
What do all skin types need? Clearly: sun protection!
Regardless of your skin type, it is especially important that you protect your skin from UV rays every day. Sunburns can permanently damage your skin and increase the risk of developing skin cancer. UV rays can also increase skin ageing and dry out the skin.
For the best protection, apply sunscreen daily in the morning and reapply it several times a day, for example when exercising or sweating. Our daily sunscreen 50+ offers you the highest sun protection factor, strengthens your skin barrier and delays skin ageing with L-carnosine. Our face cream day is also very practical, combining your daily care routine directly with SPF 15 and moisturising squalane. For your lips, apply our lip balm SPF 30. It's small and easy to use and protects your lips from dryness and chapping.
You've already got our sunscreen? Then let us introduce you to the different skin types and their care needs.
The uncomplicated one: Normal skin
Normal skin is characterised by a balanced complexion that is neither too dry nor too oily. Fine pores, good circulation and a healthy skin barrier ensure that the complexion appears particularly even and soft. Normal skin reacts rather insensitively to environmental influences and hardly shows any impurities.
For normal skin, it is usually sufficient to avoid irritating ingredients such as perfumes and fragrances and to use only light skin care formulas. For cleansing, we recommend our cleansing essentials set, which is gentle and provides your skin with mild care and moisture. For face care, look for a light texture that absorbs quickly and maintains the balance of your skin. The face cream day SPF 15 is particularly suitable for this.
The thirsty one: dry skin
Dry skin often lacks the skin's own lipids and natural moisturising factors. While lipids (e.g. ceramides) form a protective film on your skin and protect it from dryness, moisturising factors (e.g. urea) are responsible for binding them. If both are not present in sufficient quantities, this leads to an impaired skin barrier and dehydration.
Dry skin is taut and feels rough. Very dry skin also often leads to cracks, itching, redness and flaking. Factors such as heating air, hot showers, heat as well as nicotine consumption and malnutrition can intensify these signs.
If you have dry skin, you should focus on regenerating care that provides your skin with moisture and strengthens the skin barrier. With our all-round carefree set, you get everything your skin needs for body and face:
Rich formulas like our face cream night are ideal for the face. It replenishes your skin's moisture reservoir with hyaluron and squalane and protects it from dryness with shea and cocoa butter. For body care, you can use the moisturising body lotion intensive several times a day, which regenerates and softens your dry skin with panthenol, madacam nut oil and mango butter. Dry and chapped hands become velvety soft again with our hand cream.
We also have just the right thing for dry scalps with our shampoo natural: It moisturises, soothes with eyebright and lime blossom and is also particularly suitable for irritated and flaky scalps thanks to its moisturising formula. Your set is rounded off with the reliable sun protection of daily sunscreen 50+ and lip balm SPF 30, which also protect you from skin damage and dehydration.
The shiny one: Oily skin
You can recognise oily skin by large, visible pores and a shiny complexion. It is most common in people under 30 and is often accompanied by blemishes, pimples, blackheads or acne. Oily skin is caused by excessive sebum production, which can be genetically determined or caused by influences such as stress, medication, hormone fluctuations or even skin-irritating cosmetics.
When you have oily skin, it is important to use skin care products that regulate sebum production and do not increase it. Creams and lotions should therefore moisturise your skin without being greasy. For your face, we recommend our light face cream day, which is quickly absorbed and reduces impurities with panthenol. When cleansing your skin, look for anti-inflammatory ingredients, as these can also reduce impurities and redness. With the mild body wash natural, which contains soothing lime blossom and eyebright extract, you are on the safe side.
The versatile: mixed skin
In so-called combination skin, the sebaceous and sweat glands are not evenly distributed. Combination skin mainly appears on the face and is characterised by oily skin in the T-zone and dry areas on the cheeks. The T-zone often also shows the large pores and impurities typical of oily skin.
When caring for combination skin, the rule is: less is more! Be careful not to over-care for the skin, but try to meet its needs with a light, non-greasy moisturiser. face cream day SPF 15 moisturises dry areas without overburdening oily areas. In the evening, you can also moisturise your dry cheeks with our face cream night, leaving out the T-zone.
The delicate: Sensitive skin
Sensitive skin can occur all over the body and is prone to redness, irritation, feelings of tightness and itching. On the face, the skin often appears blotchy and red. Due to its impaired skin barrier, it loses moisture more easily and reacts particularly sensitively to external stimuli such as cold, heat, UV rays, wind, sunlight or certain ingredients in cosmetic products.
For sensitive skin, it is therefore especially important to avoid irritating substances such as perfumes and parabens. As a rule, the more ingredients a product contains, the more likely your sensitive skin is to react with irritation. Our mild, moisturising and anti-inflammatory skincare products therefore only contain what is good for your skin and what is really important.
With our face cream bundle and hair & body bundle, you can provide your sensitive skin with soothing care and strengthen its damaged barrier function. With the daily sunscreen 50+, you are also optimally protected against irritating environmental influences such as UVA / UVB rays and blue light.
We are convinced that the right care must be based on natural ingredients to promote and support healthy skin. newkee therefore completely avoids irritating perfumes & fragrances, microplastics, parabens and silicones.
